How to Replace a Bathtub Drain: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you have a bathtub drain that’s damaged, corroded, or simply not working as it should, you may be wondering how to replace it. While it may seem like a daunting task, replacing a bathtub drain is actually a relatively straightforward process that can be completed with just a few basic tools. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps for replacing a bathtub drain, so you can get your tub back in working order.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin, you’ll need to gather a few basic tools and materials. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Screwdriver (flathead or Phillips, depending on your drain)
  • Pliers
  • Plumbers putty
  • Tub drain removal tool (optional)

Step 2: Remove the Old Drain

The first step in replacing a bathtub drain is to remove the old drain. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the drain stopper: If your bathtub has a built-in stopper, remove it by unscrewing it from the drain or pulling it out.

  2. Locate the drain flange: The drain flange is the visible part of the drain that sits in the bathtub. Look for a small screw on the side of the flange. If you see one, use your screwdriver to remove it. If you don’t see a screw, skip to step 4.

  3. Remove the drain flange: Once the screw is removed, you should be able to pull the drain flange out of the drain. If it’s stuck, you can use pliers to grip the edge of the flange and gently pull it out.

  4. Use a drain removal tool: If the drain flange won’t budge, you may need to use a drain removal tool. This tool is designed to grip the flange and allow you to twist it out of the drain. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to use the tool.

Step 3: Install the New Drain

Once you’ve removed the old drain, it’s time to install the new one. Here’s how:

  1. Apply plumbers putty: Roll a small amount of plumbers putty between your palms to form a rope. Place the putty around the underside of the new drain flange. This will create a watertight seal between the drain and the tub.

  2. Insert the new drain: Insert the new drain into the drain hole in the tub. Press it down firmly so the putty adheres to the tub.

  3. Tighten the retaining nut: On the underside of the drain, you’ll see a retaining nut. Use your pliers to tighten this nut until the drain is firmly in place.

  4. Replace the drain stopper: If your bathtub has a built-in stopper, screw it back into the drain.

Step 4: Test the New Drain

With the new drain in place, it’s time to test it to make sure it’s working correctly. Here’s what to do:

  1. Fill the tub with a few inches of water.

  2. Let the water sit for a few minutes to make sure there are no leaks.

  3. Check the drain: Pull the stopper up and down a few times to make sure it’s working correctly. The water should drain quickly and completely.

  4. Check for leaks: Look under the tub to make sure there are no leaks or drips.

If everything looks good, you’re done! Your bathtub drain has been successfully replaced.
