If you’re looking to upgrade your bathroom or replace a damaged bathtub, installing a new bathtub can be a daunting task. However, with the right tools, knowledge, and patience, installing a bathtub can be a manageable DIY project. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to install a bathtub.
Materials you’ll need:
- Bathtub
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Safety glasses
- Construction adhesive
- Caulk
- Drain assembly
- Overflow assembly
- Plumber’s putty
- Pipe wrench
Step 1: Measure the space Before purchasing a new bathtub, measure the space where the old bathtub was located. Make sure the new bathtub will fit comfortably in the space. If you’re installing a bathtub in a new location, measure the available space in your bathroom and choose a bathtub that fits.
Step 2: Remove the old bathtub To remove the old bathtub, turn off the water supply and remove the faucet and drain assemblies. Use pliers or a screwdriver to remove any screws, bolts, or clips that hold the bathtub in place. If the bathtub is stuck in place, use a pry bar to gently lift it away from the wall.
Step 3: Prepare the area After removing the old bathtub, inspect the area for any damage or mold. Repair any damage and remove any mold. Make sure the area is clean and dry before installing the new bathtub.
Step 4: Install the drain assembly Apply plumber’s putty around the top of the drain assembly and insert it into the drain hole in the bathtub. Tighten the locknut underneath the bathtub with pliers. Insert the overflow assembly into the opening on the side of the bathtub and tighten the screws to secure it in place.
Step 5: Apply construction adhesive Apply construction adhesive to the bottom of the bathtub to secure it to the subfloor. Make sure the bathtub is level before the adhesive dries.
Step 6: Install the faucet Install the faucet according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the faucet requires a separate valve, install it before installing the bathtub.
Step 7: Connect the plumbing Connect the water supply lines to the faucet and the drain assembly. Use a pipe wrench to tighten the connections.
Step 8: Install the overflow cover Install the overflow cover according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure it is securely in place.
Step 9: Apply caulk Apply caulk around the edges of the bathtub to seal it in place. Use a damp finger or caulk smoothing tool to smooth out the caulk.
Step 10: Test the bathtub Turn on the water supply and test the bathtub for leaks. Check the drain and overflow for leaks as well. If everything is working properly, you’re done!
